These volumes comprise the court cases of the Workshop on Transition, Turbulence and Combustion, backed via the Insti tute for desktop purposes in technology and Engineering (ICASE) and the NASA Langley study heart (LaRC), in the course of June 7 to July 2, 1993. quantity I includes the contributions from the transi tion learn, and quantity II comprises the contributions from either the turbulence and combustion examine. this is often the 3rd workshop within the sequence at the topic. the 1st was once held in 1989, the second one in 1991, and their complaints have been released by way of Springer-Verlag below the titles "Instability and Transition" (edited by means of M. Y. Hussaini and R. G. Voigt) and "Instability, Transition and Turbulence" (edited by means of M. Y. Hussaini, A. Kumar and C. L. Streett) respectively. The goals of those workshops are to reveal the educational neighborhood to present technologically vital problems with transition, turbulence and combustion, and to acquaint the educational commu nity with the original blend of theoretical, computational and experimental features at LaRC. it really is was hoping those will foster con tinued interactions, and speed up development in elucidating the funda psychological phenomena of transition, turbulence and combustion. The learn components of curiosity in transition coated the complete diversity of the topic: linear and nonlinear balance, direct and large-eddy simulation and phenomenological modeling of the transition zone.

Software was used to apply the pattern of dots. The parameters included: the radial position of dots, the number of different radii at which dots were placed, the number of dots at each radii, and the size (diameter and height) of the dots. The process consisted of moving the pen, with the tip off of the surface, to a (r, B)-position, lowering the pen so that the tip would just touch the surface, and lifting the pen to leave a small dot of ink. In order to build up the diameter and height of the dot, the pen was repeatedly lowered and raised.

22 The transverse velocity amplitude Vo is the product of a function of the slow variable Xo and a function of the transverse coordinate y, which can be found by numerically solving an appropriate steady Rayleigh's equation when (J = 1 but is given by the analytical longwave solution to that equation in the long-wavelength limit (J ~ O. In either case, the streamwise velocity amplitude Uo can then be calculated from ouo U'_ - - --Vo oXo U ' (19) where, as indicated above, U is the locally parallel base flow of the shear layer, and the prime denotes differentiation with respect to y.

2. 1. Setup The rotating disk facility used in the experiment was the same used previously by Wilkinson & Malik (1985), Wilkinson et al. (1984) and Corke (1992). This uses an integrated dc-motor and air bearing to minimize vibration and maintain a constant rotation speed. 72cm diameter glass optical flat. Onto this surface we applied a 1mil thick kapton film which allowed us to place a pattern of surface roughness without the risk of damaging the glass surface. A photograph of the rotating disk setup, and coordinate frame is shown in Figure 1.
