However, like other serial killers, he was a man driven by a lust he was unable to control, one that yielded sadistic sexual gratification only when he could inflict pain and death upon his victims. As is true with all lust-driven serial killers, his acts of killing brought only temporary surcease from his compulsion; with each successful murder and the macabre thrill it provided, the need to repeat the act in fantasy and reality was reinforced. Capture and imprisonment—or death—were the only fates that could come from the wretched dilemma he faced.
That is not to say that such activities did not affect those living elsewhere—addicts coming down from a high were often desperate to get enough cash for a fix and resorted to burglary, housebreaking, and car theft. Quite often they targeted the more affluent neighborhoods, as well as West Augustine for their criminal activities. It should be noted, too, that throughout West Augustine there were many modest residences occupied by hardworking, law-abiding people. Those residents were as likely to be victimized by the criminal element as were those living in more upscale areas.
The yards of adjoining houses, cluttered with a variety of plastic lawn chairs, car seats, oil drums converted to barbecues, also offered informal outdoor-meeting areas. During daytime hours the social scene at Crack Head Corner consisted of clusters of idle men—mostly African Americans—gathered in the parking lot or clustered around the oil-drum barbecues in the yards of some of the nearby houses, a few with brown paper bags containing open bottles of liquor. Local residents stopped by the convenience store to buy cigarettes, bread, milk, and lottery tickets.
