In some matters, for example the identification of allusion to myth, there may be relatively little disagreement among scholars. On more problematic issues such as textual corruption, difference of opinion is inevitable. Whatever the nature of the emendation, the reader should understand that the disagreement over the proper text is usually far from an arbitrary preference for one interpretation over another, but in fact represents the effort of the scholarly tradition to discover our best approximation to the fifth-century Greek text.

Like all such victims in myth, Laius attempts to avoid "fate": he exposes the child, thinking to have it killed.
