She was too much of a party girl and had too many independent interests for the union to have much of a chance of surviving. Steven Seth was still in diapers when she met Clark. The rugged construction engineer was an easy conquest. He was bowled over by the dark-eyed temptress who was so well-versed in the delicate art of seduction. Jill didn’t waste much time attempting to maintain a balancing act between the husband she was still tied to, the new man in her life, and her infant son. She was a formidable woman who had a robust lust for living and charged head-on at life.

A few years after the Thanksgiving gathering, when both his parents, William Sr. and Anna Dix-Coit were seriously ill, even though he was in Houston some 3,000 miles away from Gates Mills at the time, he shouldered his share of responsibility along with his older brother for their care. He had a strong sense of family. Clark was also a loving and attentive uncle to his brother’s two boys and one girl. He loved children, and during family get-togethers he showered them with toys and with exciting yarns about his travels around the country.

By her own admission, after Jill matured and began her marrying ways, she altered her birth-date, gradually advancing it a year or two at a time into the early 1950s. But she was probably born during one of the most momentous periods of America’s history, while World War II was raging, either on June 11, 1943, or on the same day and month a year later in 1944. The little dark-haired, dark-eyed girl was as brown and feisty as one of the crawfish that prowled the Louisiana bayous and canals, but she arrived too late to remember the war years and homefront hardships like ration books and shortages of gasoline, tires, and silk stockings.
