Along with the letter was a cipher in which Zodiac provides his motives for the murders. The letter aims to separate Zodiac from anyone who might claim responsibility for the deaths of David Faraday and Betty Lou Jensen (both killed on December 20, 1968) and Darlene Ferrin (killed on July 4, 1969).
