Or, is it simply irrelevant to their lives? What is the relationship between ideal norms and actual behavior? Does one cause the other or are they mutually reinforcing? These are important questions that have only recently begun to receive the attention of researchers. A few studies suggest that alternate reproductive strategies are recognized as normative among defined groups of African Americans (Burton 1990; Franklin 1988). Burton (1990) described norms for rural, low-income, multigenerational African American families in which women bore children in early adolescence, and the children were then raised by their grandmothers.

In a similar vein, other researchers have begun to pose the possibility that early childbearing may be a rational choice in the face of extremely bleak life options (Burton 1990; Geronimus and Korenman 1993; Luker 1991, 1996; Zabin and Hayward 1993). 3 The assumptions about normative behavior underlying most adolescent childbearing prevention and intervention programs, however, often ignore even the possibility of alternative, more positive interpretations of early childbearing.

Marrying young is common, acceptable, encouraged and historically-based. (1990, 47 – 48) Attitudes toward Sexuality Cultural attitudes toward sexuality are also relevant to adolescent childbearing patterns among Latinas.
