These are important questions that have only recently begun to receive the attention of researchers. A few studies suggest that alternate reproductive strategies are recognized as normative among defined groups of African Americans (Burton 1990; Franklin 1988). Burton (1990) described norms for rural, low-income, multigenerational African American families in which women bore children in early adolescence, and the children were then raised by their grandmothers.

Altering it would deny a generation of women the chance to be mothers, a strong deterrent to change in individual behavior for young teens. In a similar vein, other researchers have begun to pose the possibility that early childbearing may be a rational choice in the face of extremely bleak life options (Burton 1990; Geronimus and Korenman 1993; Luker 1991, 1996; Zabin and Hayward 1993). 3 The assumptions about normative behavior underlying most adolescent childbearing prevention and intervention programs, however, often ignore even the possibility of alternative, more positive interpretations of early childbearing.
