That was a shocking way for Bret to describe Benoit in an interview conducted on June 26, 2007, the day after the grappler from Edmonton had been found dead in his home outside of Atlanta, along with the bodies of his wife, Nancy, and his seven-year-old son, Daniel. Police were saying that Benoit, forty, also known to the world as The Canadian Crippler and The Rabid Wolverine, had killed them over the weekend, strangling them before ending his own life by hanging himself on a weight pulley in his home gym.

And he did so without any gimmicks or an obnoxious show-biz persona. He was a role model to the men in the locker room and a hero to fans around the world. When people laughed at wrestling, dismissing it as idiotic fakery, when they turned up their nose at it for its descent into sleaziness, Benoit’s was a name everybody could point to as an example of what was still good in the game. In and out of the ring, Benoit brought a sense of dignity and respectability to a business considered vulgar by most.
