Regional involvements varied. By the early twentieth century Western society had experienced what is called the demographic transition, with low birth rates and also low infant death rates and expansion of longevity. Other societies entered this transition later on – Japan, for example, by the 1950s, key parts of A WORLD HISTORY SKELETON Latin America by the 1970s. But many regions maintained higher birth rates, yielding massive population growth and high percentages of young people in India, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America.

Historians have discussed why this occurred, in contrast to hunting and gathering societies where women’s economic importance assured them a more prominent role and voice. Because agricultural societies increased the birth rate, more of women’s time was taken up in pregnancy and early child care. In most (though not all) cases, men took primary responsibility for bringing in the major crops, assisted by children and, in peak season, by their wives. Women’s day-to-day work was also vital, in caring for gardens and animals around the house, but men overmatched them and presumably claimed disproportion power in consequence.

THE CONTEMPORARY ERA IN WORLD HISTORY There are two built-in difficulties to defining the contemporary period in world history. First, we’re still in it, which means that we don’t know how the story ends with regard to many crucial themes. We know what the themes are – for example, a literally global effort to find political alternatives to monarchy and empire – but we don’t know how they will be resolved. This is an inherent contrast with all previous periods. Second, the last hundred years have seen all sorts of developments and much messiness.
