A common research design is to combine a quantitative survey to map out and describe the patterns and trajectories of young people’s lives and to follow this up with more in-depth interviews exploring how these are realized by individual actors. Though mixed methods are becoming increasingly popular, the quantitative/qualitative split is still very much discernible in youth research. Analysis of quantitative data has enriched our understanding of the complexity and variation in young people’s lives.

Further, the stages on either side are not in themselves more solid or more fixed than this transitional stage. Quite when childhood, adolescence and adulthood begin and what is entailed in these states are themselves matters of some complexity, which have been much discussed. Linked to the idea of transitions within the life-course is the idea of ‘generations’. This has proved to be an elusive but fruitful idea in the history of sociological analysis (Edmunds and Turner, 2002). Generations may refer to sets of people born within a particular period of time, such as a decade (cohorts), to families, or in historically significant periods of time.

However, while the collection and analysis of qualitative longitudinal data clearly has important advantages it is also costly in terms of time and money. One way of addressing the need for more dynamic biographies is through interviewing young people at different stages, including older generations, for example by collecting data both from young people and their parents. In recent years the use of the narrative approach in social science research has become increasingly popular and we can talk about the emergence of a ‘narrative turn’.
