His engagement with the Early Modern altered as his own thoughts developed, but also as the inevitable comparison between the Early Modern, and his contemporary age, evolved in Eliot’s own work, and in that of critics and poets whose writing he was attentive to. The Early Modern was Eliot’s declared ‘favourite literary period’; this study continually reflects, however, the ways in which that period was further nuanced, for him, by the understanding of the Early Modern in recent criticism (LI, 263).

For the American critic Felix Schelling, this perceived unified appeal in the Elizabethan drama allowed for a negative commentary, in a style close to Eliot’s later comparisons, on recent work. For Schelling, the Elizabethan material marked a forcible contrast to literature from the late nineteenth century. Elizabethan writing was ‘focused in the activities of the age itself and was literally a great national utterance’. ‘Modern drama,’ however, is ‘less interesting’ and contains ‘more of the individual less of the time’.

Yet his respect for this criticism seems, from the guiding comments entered on the Reading List, to be at best equivocal. His unguarded view of these recommended critics’ attempts to describe the literature of the earlier period is given, though, in a piece he wrote on ‘Studies in Contemporary Criticism II’ from November–December 1918. A. S. Boas’s Shakespeare’s Predecessors ‘the literary criticism is negligible’; and that Felix Schelling’s Elizabethan Drama is ‘the most painful of all’. For Eliot, then, the critical ‘field’ of his topic remained in his view outmoded at best, and void of critical understanding.
