Example text

In my view these dangers are not imaginary, but real. For the past twenty to thirty years students have everywhere been gaining admission to our universities with standards of literacy that would have shocked such founding fathers of our discipline as the D'Anconas, Creizenachs and Cohens at the start of this century. We have thus started to reap the harvest from this seed-corn, especially in departments of English and drama, in the recruitment of staff who, lacking training in either a sense of historical chronology or a knowledge of theology, and unable to read any play text or related document in a language other than English, are nevertheless required to teach medieval drama and theatre.

Young was able to navigate the apparent contradiction between his claim that the drama arose in the liturgy but was not of the liturgy by arguing that the trope to the Introit in the Easter Mass, rather than the Easter Mass itself, was the point of origin for the drama. That the musical and verbal text of this trope, the famous Quern quaeritis, is closely associated with subsequent Easter enactments within the Latin liturgy is a claim that few would care to dispute, even today. But Young's assumption that a trope is only 'paraliturgicaP and not 'authentically' liturgical is, from the present standpoint of the study of the medieval liturgy, a highly suspect claim.

And to this group of four, I must append a fifth, albeit from the years 1958-60: this is Noah Greenberg's revival of The Play of Daniel {Ludus Danielis) in January 1958 at the Cloisters in New York City, followed in i960 by my own revival in his version of it for the Carmel Music Festival (with singers from the San Francisco Opera and Stanford University conducted by Sandor Salgo). The impact of both productions on their East and West Coast audiences was comparable to that of Sir Tyrone Guthrie's production of Sir David Lindsay's Ane Satyre of the Three Estaitis in Edinburgh in 1948 and the first production of the whole of the York and Chester cycles in York and Chester respectively in 1951.
