These conflicting messages can be considered the arrows of organizational fragmentation. Consider each signal as an arrow targeted for delivery to the organization. The ones that are bigger and occur more frequently are the ones that people typically respond to. Since product or service quality arrows often take more time after the event to be delivered to the internal organization, they usually don’t have the same immediate impact as cost and delivery.

A lean organization should be one that is not only capable but also sustainable. For this reason, it is important to consider not only the aspects of work that contribute value directly to the customer but also those identified in the business processes of the life cycle model that ensure enabling actions, such as knowledge capability. An organization can contain a number of business units, with some being defined as profit-and-loss entities (P&Ls for short). Conceptually, a P&L should be responsible for all the cost generators and investment factors that contribute to either financial profit or loss.

Life-cycle Business Processes Every organization’s business processes have life cycles; organizational leaders should acknowledge this early, as well as the need to think in terms of an integrated business.
