This was the case with Brinson Partners, a global investment firm founded by Gary Brinson in the mid-1980s. Brinson worked closely with Jeff Diermeier, an intuitive, big-picture thinker, to craft a vision of what it would take to be a premier player in the money management business on a global scale. Brinson Partners became so successful that they appeared on the radar screen of United Banks of Switzerland, a giant financial concern, which eventually acquired them in the mid-1990s. It is also possible for task-oriented leaders to succeed if their business largely depends on operational excellence.

The result of our survey showed, however, that fewer than 5 percent of the employees could state the firm’s four core values. This example is the rule rather than the exception. Most of the organizations that we work with have talked about values—perhaps even formally identified them, as in the case just cited—but they still need to bring the values to life.
