4. Provide individuals offices only on a demonstrated needs basis. THE END OF THE TRADITIONAL WORK SCHEDULE There’s also something to be said for working a set schedule. Unfortunately most of our lives don’t really fit the 8-to-5 corporate work box. However, years ago the only way that a manager could know if employees were working was to physically see them sitting in a seat for a set amount of hours every day. I remember when I did telemarketing many years ago (yes, it was horrible) dozens of us were sitting around in little half cubicles with nothing but a phone and a computer screen.

I have yet to find any substantial data or research that suggests that flexible work environments have a negative impact. Change is never easy and for many organizations it’s much easier for them to leave things be instead of try to do something different, but as mentioned earlier in the book, the rate of change is increasing and it’s no longer good enough to remain static. SOME BENEFITS According to Global Workplace Analytics,8 a typical business would save approximately $11,000 per employee per year if that employee were allowed to work from home just half the time.

Organizations have the ability to sell and market their products or services anywhere in the world and are no longer bound by transportation, cultural, talent acquisition, currency, or communication barriers. Even startups that have offices in one local area can easily open up another location anywhere in the world. More and more it’s becoming harder to differentiate if someone lives in another city or on another continent. Technology is a large driver for making this possible and it’s something affecting small and large organizations alike.
