Yet this voice of opposition to warfare, while initially futile, signified what the paper called ‘the subtle infection of womanishness which is bringing nearly the whole of the world’s manhood to womanish points of view on manly matters’. This ‘infection’ of anti-war sentiment, symbolized by the Hague Conferences, would not only end war, but would emasculate men by reducing the significance of their gender role and end their ‘superiority’ to women.
At first trained to be an observer, Bishop represents himself as always aiming at the supreme experience of being a lone fighter pilot: But all the times I was observing I wanted to be fighting. Whenever I saw one of the small, swift, single-seater machines, which were just then coming into vogue for fighting purposes, my resolve to become a fighting pilot would grow stronger and stronger.
