At first trained to be an observer, Bishop represents himself as always aiming at the supreme experience of being a lone fighter pilot: But all the times I was observing I wanted to be fighting. Whenever I saw one of the small, swift, single-seater machines, which were just then coming into vogue for fighting purposes, my resolve to become a fighting pilot would grow stronger and stronger.
