A man was arrested on suspicion of being involved in the murder. Somewhat coincidentally, the day after his detention, a house in Govan was raided and two other men detained. These men were found in possession of a German-made automatic pistol, which was obviously a souvenir of the recent war, and all three were remanded in custody for 48 hours for further inquiry. The suspicion of involvement in the murder of Constable Campbell was lifted when it was realised that the recovered firearm was of a different calibre to that which killed the officer and two of the men were released.

During the course of that Sunday, while police were carrying out door-to-door inquires in the neighbourhood, they made another arrest. This time they detained a man, who, it turned out, was wanted for a previous assault and robbery in the Lanarkshire area. Another man was also detained in the Springburn area of the city. Both of the detained men bore a striking resemblance to Constable Campbellā€™s description, but that appeared to be the only reason for their arrests. There was no other evidence.

One of the gunmen, described as a young lad of no more than 18 or 19 years of age, crept up close, placed the barrel of his pistol against one of the locks and pulled the trigger. Far from blowing them open, the bullet jammed in the lock and the doors remained firmly closed. An identical attempt on the other door lock met with the same result. In an almost deadly fit of pique, or possibly in desperation, he began firing round after round into the doors and the other men followed his example. Those inside the van, two court officers and the two prisoners, dived for cover.
