Charles E. Spicer, Jr. Senior Editor, St. Martin’s True Crime Library LOVE AND DEATH The badly charred body of a petite woman was found slumped inside the scorched shell of the truck. Her clothing was burned off and the flesh of the trunk and upper part of the body was seared black by the flames. It appeared she had been deliberately set on fire, and the flames spread throughout the interior of the truck. There was no identification with the body, and authorities were able to determine how she died before they learned who she was.
The petite five-foot-three-inch ninety-five-pound woman with the big voice and the red highlights in her dark shoulder-length hair had absorbed more than her fair share of bad breaks and hard knocks in her thirty-four years. Some of them were her own fault. She had two failed marriages behind her, a reputation for hanging around with outlaw bikers, and a serious problem with drugs and alcohol that had landed her in one jam after another. During the past three years she piled up three drunk-driving arrests in California, served a stint in jail, and for a while was under psychiatric care that included a period of hospitalization.
