In a similar examination of the effects of 2,4-D on Chlorophenoxy herbicides 43 red kidney beans SMITIi (1948) reported that four hours after 2,4-D application there was a decrease in the soluble sugars and starch-dextrins in the leaves. Three days after treatmem the soluble sugar content had increased, while the starch-dextrins greatly decreased in the leaves of treated plants. In the stems both the soluble sugars and the starch-deXitrins decreased. By the seventh day after the 2,4-D treatment there were only 46 percent of the soluble sugars and seven percent of the starch-deXltrins in the leaves of treated plants compared to the controls.
