If this is so, then the phonemic bi-segmentation of CS e- [έί£-] as je- can be dated approximately as contemporary with the qualitative differentiations of vowels that led to the vowel shift from CS-II to CS-III (in other words, CS-II e- [έίε] versus α- [Χα-] => CS-III je- versus o-). There is evidence that this vowel shift occurred in the western dialects of Common Slavic some time around 800 - it preceded the so-called metathesis of liquid diphthongs (which dates from around 800) in Polish and Sorbian and in the dialects to the north and west of these, but it followed the metathesis of liquid diphthongs in Czech and Slovak and in the South Slavic languages.
