But the heavy mascara was running down both cheeks and tears were not far away. I took her to a local hotel and told the night porter who I was and said that Sadie was a vital witness we were protecting from gangsters by moving her around hotels. The guy was goggle-eyed at the appearance of Sadie, not normally the sort of girl who pitched up in his hotel. I paid in advance and left satisfied that I had done the right thing. The next day I got a call from Sadie who said she was now off to stay with her sister and could I meet her so that she could repay me for the bed and breakfast.
Early that evening, he was setting up for a gig in a local club where the band had been booked to entertain the punters that night. Kevin and his mum took the opportunity to pop up to the new house to do some decorating work and Emma was down south in Glasgow for a fitting of her wedding dress. m. He had a quick shower and he was barely dry when his friend Mark Foubister called to pick Kevin up for a game of pool at Carters’ Bar in the town. The first signs of concern emerged on the Saturday morning when there was no sign of Kevin looking for his breakfast and then it was found that his bed had clearly not been slept in that night.
The family was devastated and, with nowhere to turn, they approached me through the organisation A Search for Justice, which now no longer exists. Not much misses the locals in such places and the reception staff of the hotel where I was staying knew why I was there even before I picked up the room key. In the way a detective often does, I casually asked a member of staff what had happened and was told that it was common knowledge that Kevin had been given a kicking and thrown in the harbour.
