Other conventional parameters from our sampling campaign are given by Kersten et al. (13). During two cruises of RV GAUSS in October and November 1987, suspended particulate matter was collected. The first covered the southern North Sea, the second the Skagerrak and the German Bight. The results are presented in Table 2. Noteworthy is the result of the sample taken at the 24 November from a depth of 100 m in the Skagerrak. A very low particle concentration was found at this position due to the halocline at about 50 m which is more or less stable throughout the year.
Some of the suspension samples were also analysed for conventional parameters such as CaC03 , Total Organic Carbon Content (TOC), Al, Fe and various heavy metals. RESULTS First samples for radionuclide analysis in SPM were taken from areas of the German Bight and estuaries of some German rivers in 1986. The data are given in Table 1. Numerous Chernobyl derived artificial radionuclides were detectable in these samples. During a cruise covering the entire North Sea from January to March 1987, samples of particulate material were obtained by centrifugal separation while underway along the track of RV GAUSS.
