Geophysicists use the principles of physics, mathematics, and chemistry to study not only the earth’s surface, but also its internal composition; ground and surface waters; atmosphere; oceans; and magnetic, electrical, and gravitational forces. Geological oceanographers and geophysical oceanographers study the topographic features and the physical makeup of the ocean floor.

Semisubmersible rigs work on the same principle as submersible rigs— through the inflating and deflating of their lower hulls. The main difference with a semisubmersible rig, however, is that when the air is let out of the lower hull, the rig does not submerge to the seafloor. Instead, the rig is partially submerged and still floats above the drill site. When drilling, the lower hull, which is filled with water, provides stability to the rig.
