After his return to Berlin, Chekhov continued his studies in anthroposophy and accepted an invitation to direct Habima in Twelfth Night. Habima was a Hebrew-speaking theatre, founded in Moscow in 1918, which had received support and teaching from Stanislavsky and international acclaim for its production of The Dybbuk, directed by Vakhtangov in 1922. The company was now wandering around Europe before settling in Palestine in 1931. There was considerable mutual respect between Chekhov and Habima because of its connections with Vakhtangov.

This was Joseph Stalin (1879–1953): a key figure in the Russian Revolution, Stalin became general secretary of the Communist Party in 1922. He became increasingly dictatorial after 1924.
