Most Lakotas I spoke with feel that the overall level of education needed to find jobs is increasing. A high school diploma or used to be adequate for any government, tribal, or nonprofit organization position. Now two-year college degrees are being required for the same jobs. A woman from Rosebud in her thirties feels her prospects for job advancement are dim: ‘‘I think school is the most important for the young people to make it.
Relatives come and go as work opportunities appear and vanish or as love relationships begin and end. Relatives returning from off-reservation work are another common component of households, for the short term or sometimes for the long term. ’’ Children Within the reservation communities it does take a village to raise a child. The costs of children are not borne entirely by their parents, and in some instances are not at all. Several mechanisms spread economic responsibility for children across the community.
Economy, Lakotas have difficulty finding access to market-based forms of production.
