In welded tuffs the fragments are molten together and the open space is usually less than in the unwelded tuffs. However, in places, the welded tuffs have secondary porosity at opened-up joints and fractures.
If opened-up joints, fractures, open bedding plane contacts, and solution holes, are not or hardly connected, then the overall consolidated rock can hardly be called a permeable rock. Unconsolidated rocks are permeable where the pore space between the individual grains is sufficiently large. Large openings are normally associated with the larger grains in coarse-grained unconsolidated rocks.
