This data clearly runs contrary to current prejudices against public schools, and the authors concluded that it might be time to re-examine the concept that the private sector is better than the public sector in educating American youth. Another idea championed by the free market advocates is that innovative public charter schools would perform better than normal public school counterparts. Charter schools were a central part of the NCLB package passed by Congress to let free market innovation improve the schools.

Educational Attainment (1998) shows that there are many costs to the country when students drop out of school. Students who drop out of school are more likely to be unemployed (p. 4), live shorter lives (Meara, Richards, & Cutler, 2008, p. 1), and are more likely to be incarcerated (Harlow, 2003, p. 3). Data can be used to predict the social and monetary value of spending resources to educating people. Students that drop out of school are more likely to reject societal values and become a burden on society.

9. There are two things that one should note from these statistics. One is that these graphs showing school performance are of limited value in the overall improvement of the school systems. They form one of the cornerstones of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) for it tells parents where the “bad” schools are. The truth is, one can predict with high accuracy where the bad schools are without using these graphs. So, on one hand, NCLB’s plan to give everyone data is good, but it really doesn’t mean very much.
