Educational Attainment (1998) shows that there are many costs to the country when students drop out of school. Students who drop out of school are more likely to be unemployed (p. 4), live shorter lives (Meara, Richards, & Cutler, 2008, p. 1), and are more likely to be incarcerated (Harlow, 2003, p. 3). Data can be used to predict the social and monetary value of spending resources to educating people. Students that drop out of school are more likely to reject societal values and become a burden on society.
9. There are two things that one should note from these statistics. One is that these graphs showing school performance are of limited value in the overall improvement of the school systems. They form one of the cornerstones of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) for it tells parents where the “bad” schools are. The truth is, one can predict with high accuracy where the bad schools are without using these graphs. So, on one hand, NCLB’s plan to give everyone data is good, but it really doesn’t mean very much.
