There followed an extended period characterized by a balance of power among chieftains in the various localities and, when they occurred, family feuds confined to individual districts. The next period of political development commenced around the beginning of the twelfth century and lasted until about 1220. Jón Viðar Sigurðsson has argued convincingly that during this period there was a gradual accumulation of power among the most influential families.

One of the challenges faced in the book is to study the selected group of widows within the context of their family and lifecycle as fully as possible. The rationale for this approach is that such contextualizing is the only way to see all the factors involved in a widow’s life. It is necessary to view these women over the course of their lives, because they were first daughters and wives, and possibly heiresses and sisters, before becoming widows.
