Next to her was Matz in his Nazi uniform, a soldier instead of a husband, a brideguard instead of a bridegroom. No sooner had he returned to the front, the death photo came. It shows a poor soldier torn to shreds by a mine. The death photo is hand-sized: in the middle of a black field a little gray heap of human remains can be seen resting on a white cloth. Against the black field the white cloth looks as small as a children’s handkerchief, a white square with a strange design painted in the middle.
That same year, Herta Müller was awarded the Aspekte Prize for the best literary debut in Germany and was given permission to travel to Germany to accept the prize. The next year, the Romanian authorities did not allow her to participate in the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize competition, and as a result Herta Müller put pressure on the Securitate in Timişoara; she reasoned that if they did not let her travel to Germany, the German journalists would travel to Romania, and then she asked the Securitate whether that would be preferable.
Meanwhile the Romanian authors of our generation wrote heavy-handed, metaphysically oriented literature that they themselves probably did not understand either. And their literary discussions (I once or twice attended a meeting of a literary circle of Romanian students) did not have a dialogical character; they were not communicating with each other but were simply promoting themselves. They were, or so it seemed to me, overloaded with cultural baggage that they could not grasp and were far removed from the reality in which they were living.
