If you reject the message you will take extra care and, soon, people will forget the occasion when you were less accurate and only remember the many occasions when you produced good results. As a manager this means that you must not only be conscious of the messages you give yourself and accept from others, but you must also be very careful not to programme your staff with limiting messages that will produce work of a lesser quality.

Action points Take a jigsaw with just 30 to 50 pieces. Turn the pieces face down and ensure the picture on the box is not visible. Either test yourself first or ask your team to complete the puzzle with the pieces face down. Time them with a stop watch. 52 The Company Break the puzzle up and turn it face up. Allow the team to look at the picture on the box and ask them to assemble the puzzle in the normal way. Check the time taken. Almost certainly, it will take them much longer to complete the plain puzzle than the one with the picture.
