Both were a response to the ‘reign of free competition’ ushered in by the industrial revolution—in which ‘enormous fortunes’ co-existed with ‘poverty and degradation’, capital was ‘all triumphant, and labour was crushed under a remorseless tyranny’—and both aimed ‘to substitute a system of association for one of competition’. A system of association, the paper continued, would be superior in two respects. Firstly, it would bring a more rational and equitable economic system, based on collective forms of production and consumption that should eliminate the wastage endemic in the present system, improve the condition of the workers and hence the quality of their work, and ultimately generate more wealth.
