Photograph by Mike Siegel Seattle Times. The 787 shown in the photo was Plane 1, and it was far from a complete airplane and would never fly commercially. The 787 that would be successfully certified by the FAA would be Plane 4 on August 26, 2011. The first 3 787's would be written off as R&D expense. 4. Compared to the 1967 Boeing 737, the Boeing 787 had expanded closer to 3 million parts due to the increased sophistication of commercial airplanes. In addition, the commercial airplane had now become an integral part of a broader global system of inflight commercial airplanes including flight control and maintenance systems.

Another was the continued insistence by countries (such as China) with large commercial airplane markets that more of the design and manufacturing tasks be done in their countries by their workers. Condit and his team envisioned building a different kind of Boeing entity: a virtually integrated organization with strategic partners spanning the globe. The new format would use advanced IT to support more customer-driven product design and manufacturing. The company would change from an aerospace manufacturer with building commercial jet airliners as its major business to a large aerospace systems integrator with a balanced mix of space, defense, and commercial airplane businesses.
