Water, the dispersed or emulsified phase, is present in amounts of 2 to 40% by volume. Between 15 and 30% is normal for invert-emulsion muds. Water from almost any source is acceptable (an exception is produced water that contains emulsion breakers) because the chemical composition of the water usually is adjusted for the particular application of the oil mud. For example, calcium chloride is added to the water to improve the hole stability in shale. The other components of oil muds are varied.
The drilling operation is supervised by a drilling supervisor, more often known as a drilling foreman or tool pusher, augmented by a drilling engineer, a wellsite geologist, a mud engineer and a mud logger. The floormen do the hard work on the rig floor; the work consists mainly of making and breaking connections and adding or removing joints of drillpipe, while the derrick man assists the operation on the "monkey board" 60, 90, or 120 feet up in the derrick. The driller controls all the rig functions and handles the brakes from his console at one side of the drawworks.
The total solids content of the mud is used as a control, along with the methylene-blue test as a measure of active clay content, and steps are taken as needed to hold the ratio of inactive solids to bentonitic solids at less than 2:1. llb/bbl; and 5 lb of polymer per 10,000 lb of barite added to raise the density. As drilling progresses, the program of treatment is based on the mud-making qualities of the formations drilled, as shown by base exchange capacity and retort tests. Polyacrylate polymer is added if lower filtration rate is wanted.
