Much as Lombroso searched for physical cause of crime, these studies have shared that concern. Yet whilst biological explanations may explain why some individuals do commit crime, they can never explain all criminal behaviour (although some confidently suggest they have, for example, criminologist Johannes Lange (1931) was convinced criminality was inherited from parents – he titled his book Crime as Destiny). The weaknesses of biological explanations can be offset somewhat if criminologists and researchers look at the interplay of biological, psychological and social approaches (as a few have), creating a more unified approach to the study of crime.
It is consequently one example of the difficulty in separating theories into categories under broad headings. Strain Example: Merton (1938; 1968) Anomie is a concept that stems from the work of functionalist Emile Durkheim, and means a state of confusion about social rules and values that is often caused by rapid social change. Durkheim first developed the concept as part of his attempt to explain suicide, but in terms of criminology it is perhaps more relevant to turn to the work of sociologist Robert Merton, who in America set out to explain the reasons for crime being concentrated in lower-class areas, and in lower-class and minority groups.
He was heavily influenced by positivism in terms of his methodology, producing what is termed anthropometrical research (this describes attempts to derive character traits by measuring features of the body) that was quantitative in nature. Early biological criminology Many criminological textbooks acknowledge Lombroso as founder of criminology, which is interesting given that at the time of Lombroso’s writing he was only one of a group of professionals and interested parties who had turned their attentions to the study of the criminal (admittedly many did not claim to adopt the scientific rigour that Lombroso suggested of his work).
