Now all this preliminary training was at an end. Samuel had been graduated from Andover Theological Seminary in 1823 and had worked, since then, in the offices of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions in Boston until he should be definitely assigned to a place in the foreign field. In the summer just ending, things had happened rapidly. Samuel's field of foreign service, the Cherokee Nation of Indians, had been assigned to him; he had married the woman who was to go with him as assistant missionary (significant title implying no limitation of duties of wife- Page 20 hood, motherhood, teaching, supervision of a large mission family, nursing in the community, leadership in such minor matters of church life as fell to the women of a congregation); and he had been ordained as Missionary to the Heathen only six days before they set out to the Cherokee country where the ''heathen" dwelt.
