We organize knowledge into disciplines, our lives into CHAPTER 3 | 25 roles, and our organizations into departments. In general, these structures help us to operate efficiently and effectively in the world. But disciplines have a tendency to become isolated, departments become silos, and roles become fixed. We say, “This is the role of marketing, and that is the role of sales. This is engineering, and that is medicine. ” What was created to serve us can become a limiting factor for personal innovation.
Colleagues can be threatened that we might succeed and the implications that success would have for them. So don’t expect immediate backing from those you might think will be most supportive. If you feel the need for emotional support, find other innovators to hang with. If not, just do your thing in silence until you have some momentum. Once your direction is clear and you speak with confidence, friends and family will all be on your side again. It’s the infancy and transition phase that is most difficult to survive.
This is so because, without a full understanding of normal, the provocations are without clear foundation and can be dismissed.
