Retreat during combat is another form of mass panic whereby a single retreating soldier can unintentionally foment a chain reaction of fear, causing an entire army to flee. Retreats become routs as fleeing soldiers become highly vulnerable to attack from behind and enemies become emboldened by the chase.

It was amended again in 1990 with the intent to reduce acid rain by cutting emissions of sulfates like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. The act has successfully reduced sulfate emissions by 50 percent in the United States over the past three decades, dramatically improving air quality and public health. ”26 Europe has passed similar air quality laws and has experienced a 60 percent drop in sulfate concentrations in its atmosphere. ”27 There are two types of aerosols that have been known to affect climate change: carbon black and sulfates.

The spreading of rumors is a simple social chain reaction. The initiator of a rumor tells a few people, each of whom tells a few others, and so on, causing the rumor to spread rapidly through society like an epidemic. ” The instigation of rumors gives rise to unexpected outcomes, especially given that rumors distort messages as they get passed along.
