The chronicle of murders in that county covers not only the obvious settings of the new industrial towns which burgeoned in the boom decades of the Industrial Revolution, but also such locations as farms, shops, idyllic rural places such as Fewston Reservoir, and even in those modern centres of global tourism and ‘heritage industry’: YORK and the scenic Pennines.

Her lifestyle was very much a risky one, and she was prone to making misjudgements: one of these was taking in Calvert. When Waterhouse found that Calvert had stolen from her, she reported it, and it was after she failed to return to the police station that a constable went to check on her and found her body in the house.
