I’ve had the pleasure of reading many of his books, two of which are true crime set among the Amish: Abandoned Prayers and this one (with Rebecca Morris), A Killing in Amish Country. Amish society is deeply religious. For centuries, the culture has changed little and remains virtually untouched by outside influences. Most of us couldn’t imagine living without cell phones and cars and all of the conveniences modern life offers. Yet the Amish continue to flourish without any of those things. No electricity.
A poster of Disney’s Bambi, the kind that might have been included with a book or DVD, was on the wall above the tiny furniture. Barbara had sponge painted the walls light pink. The master bedroom looked like one in a million other homes, with a maple four-poster bed, dresser, and bedside table, probably made for Barbara and Eli at the time of their marriage. In the closet, a few of Barbara’s modest calf-length dresses, all in dark hues of brown, green, gray, or black, hung next to a few men’s white shirts.
She was stunned to find that he owed a local printing shop—which was demanding its money—$9,000 for help printing and mailing a fishing magazine to his customers. When it was her turn to bake pies for gmay, or church, Eli wouldn’t give her the money to buy the ingredients. “Failing to produce pies that the church people were expecting to eat after lunch humiliated her,” an Amish friend said. “It was very upsetting to her. ” Eli’s absences, his neglecting to feed and care for his wife and children, and his physically shoving and grabbing Barbara—witnessed by their children—add up to domestic violence.
