Several Australian and Singaporean reporters had contacted, and tried to contact me, while I was at Villawood to ask all sorts of questions. ” Having kept up to date by reading online articles in the preceding weeks, I could imagine what they would be. The three of us were the last passengers to disembark. My arrival experience was slightly different from that of other travellers’ in that I was not travelling on a passport, but on a single-use ‘travel document’ issued in lieu by Singapore.

The blows knocked him to the ground, bleeding profusely from the mouth, upsetting the table and pushing the couch beside it from its place. It is a testament to Tony’s strength that the trail of blood shows that despite at least these injuries, he managed to get up and run, pushing aside the easy chair next to the couch. He headed not for the back door which was closer but, for some reason, down the hallway for the front door. Perhaps someone had blocked his way. It is chilling to even attempt to imagine the confusion, shock, pain and terror that Tony was going through.

Of course, that was not going to stop the persistent ones. We were informed by our old neighbours that reporters had come knocking, asking whether anyone had seen me. It seemed that some especially tenacious ones had decided to stake out the block. Having just regained my freedom to come and go as I pleased, and eager to put it to good use, I decided to see what was happening for myself. On a number of occasions, I used a circuitous route to get to the block overlooking my old one, and watched the reporters trying to catch sight of me.
